Research Plan – It is recommended that this section be prepared in a word-processing program, then converted to a PDF file and attached to the form pages. The name of the applicant must appear in the upper right hand corner of each page, and the pages must be numbered consecutively, beginning with page 8. The research plan must be typed in a font that has no more than 15 characters per linear inch (6 characters per cm), with no more than 6 lines per vertical inch, and no more than 57 lines per page. Top and bottom margins should be at least 2 cm, and side margins at least 1.5 cm. Proposals that exceed these limits will be returned without review. Recommended fonts include Ariel 12 point, Times 12 point or Times Roman 12 point. The proposal must contain these subheadings, and observe these space limits:
Specific Aims – State the hypothesis that is to be tested, the specific aims addressed by the proposed work, and a brief rational for the chosen approach. One-half page limit (about 30 lines).
- Background and Significance – State how the proposed work fits with what has been done in other laboratories. Do not exceed 1 1/2 pages (about 84 lines)
- Preliminary Data – Review any data from the PI’s laboratory that is relevant to the proposed work, and which suggests that the proposed experiments will garner interpretable results. All graphs tables and figures must be placed next to the appropriate text. Each graph, table and figure must be clearly labeled, with a legend that is of the same font size as the text. Do not exceed 3 pages, including graphs tables and figures.
- Research Design and Methods – Describe the experiments that will be performed to address each of the specific aims. Give a rationale for each series of experiments, state the anticipated outcomes, and describe alternative approaches. All graphs tables and figures must be placed next to the appropriate text. Each graph, table and figure must be clearly labeled, with a legend that is of the same font size as the text. Do not exceed 5 pages, including graphs, tables and figures.
- Timeline – Please give an estimate of how long each of the proposed experimental series will require, and an approximate order in which the experiments will be done. It is recommended that this section not exceed 1/2 page
- Literature Cited – Give a full reference (all authors, full title of reference, journal volume, inclusive pages and year) for all published work cited in the proposal. There is no page limit for this section.
- Protection of Human Subjects – Please state how the research protocol for human subjects (if any) will meet and comply with the relevant national and international laws regarding protection of human subjects. Please state the precautions to be taken to ensure the privacy of each subject. There is no page limit for this section.
- Protection of Animal Subjects – please state how the research protocol for vertebrate animals (if any) will meet and comply with the relevant laws regarding use of laboratory animals. There is no page limit for this section.
APPENDIX
1. Electronic copies of up to three publications by the PI that are relevant to the proposed work.
2. A signed letter of support from any collaborating investigators, written on Institutional letterhead.
3. A letter from the applicant’s department chair (or equivalent), stating that the applicant holds (or will hold at the time of award activation) an independent research or academic track position.
