Name of Award: Augusto Odone New Investigator Award
Purpose: To encourage promising young scientists to pursue a career in research aimed at investigating the pathogenesis and treatment of adrenomyeloneuropathy. Preference will be given to projects that are translational/clinical in nature.
Applicant Description:
1. Applicants must have an independent academic or research track position at a junior level, by the time of award activation. The applicant must meet institutional requirements for submission of an extramural, peer reviewed grant proposal.
2. Applicants may have no more than seven years of active faculty/staff appointment prior to award activation.
3. Postdoctoral research fellows are ineligible for this award unless they will have faculty/staff appointment at the time of activation.
4. Applicants may have no more than $175,000 per year in other extramural grant support (direct costs), excluding principal investigator and collaborating investigator salaries, fringe benefits, and intramural funding. (Funds from awards that terminate prior to the activation date are excluded.)
5. The principal investigator must have sole responsibility for:
a. Preparing and submitting the proposal.
b. Conducting the research.
c. Analyzing, reporting and publishing the results.
d. Allocating and administering the research budget.
Allowable expenses will include:
1. Up to 15% of Principal Investigator’s salary and fringe benefits
2. Salary and fringe benefits for laboratory personnel
3. Capital Equipment
4. Laboratory animals and/or patient care costs
5. Laboratory supplies
Maximum Award $150,000 per year for 2 years. An additional year may be possible with demonstration of satisfactory progress. The award will not pay institutional overhead

Selection of recipient will be made jointly by The Scientific Advisory Board of The Myelin Project and Scientific Advisors of Olivers Army at The Myelin Project Annual Meeting held October 22-25, 2009 in Toronto.
